Oruro is the capital city of the homonymous department, is located at 3,700 meters between the departments of La Paz and PotosÃ. Every year in Oruro, one of the most important carnivals in the world takes place.
How to get to Oruro
Several bus companies connect Oruro with the main cities of Bolivia.
Travel time to: La Paz from 3 to 4 hours. Potosà 5 hours. Cochabamba from 4 to 5 hours. Sucre from 8 to 10 hours. Santa Cruz de la Sierra from 6 pm to 8 pm There are also buses to Chile.
By train you can travel from Oruro to Uyuni and Villazón.
Visit to Oruro
Many attractions of Oruro have to do with mining activity, in addition to native cultures and traditions.
The Sanctuary of the Virgen del Socavón is one of the most visited sites in the city. The Virgen del Socavón is adored by the miners of Bolivia and there are many devotees who make pilgrimages from all regions of the country to ask and thank. On Carnival Saturday the virgin is visited by thousands of dancers.
Trip to Oruro
The Oruro Carnival is the most important celebration in Bolivia. Thousands of dancers and musicians parade with their comparsas. During the carnival it is difficult to get accommodation.
Monument and Sanctuary of the Virgen de la Candelaria del Socavón

The Monument to the Virgin of the Socavón in the city of Oruro is located at 3,845 meters above sea level and has a height of 45.4 meters and the weight is 1,500 tons. The imposing figure has 8 floors and a chapel at its base where many pilgrims arrive. The work was inaugurated in 2013 and blessed by Pope Benedict XVI.

Spa of Obrajes
Very famous thermal baths located 25 kilometers from Oruro. An ideal place to have relaxing and therapeutic baths.
Capachos spa
These thermal baths are 10 kilometers away from the city.
Lake Poopó
The Lake Poopó is one of the main ones of Bolivia, is located 55 km. of Oruro. On the lake is Panza Island ideal for fishing or spending a day outdoors. Near Lake Poopó live peasant and indigenous families with ancestral customs. The most known villages are Poopo, Pazña, Aullagas. The area is considered an ecological reserve because of its diversity of fauna, where birds such as flamenco stand out.
Uru Uru Lake
The Uru Uru Lake is located to the south of the city on the railroad town of Machacamarca. In the lake you can fish and know the coastal populations. In Machacamarca there is a very complete railway museum.
Salar de Coipasa
The Salar Coipasa is the second most important salt flat in Bolivia after Uyuni. It is located 225 km. of Oruro. It has an area of 2,218 km2. The landscape of the salar is impressive. In some places there are communities that live from the extraction of salt and in other sectors there are lagoons.
Church of Yarvicoya
The Church of Yarvicoya is located a few kilometers from Oruro, within the jurisdiction of Caracollo, near the road to La Paz. The temple has a mestizo baroque architectural style and has been declared a national monument.
Calacala
Calacala is an archaeological site located 21 kilometers from Oruro. Between the hills and the water springs, there is an important collection of cave paintings.

House of Culture Museum

Description: Exhibition of historical objects. It was founded in 1975 and depends on the Mayor of Oruro.
San Miguel Museum of Sacred Art
Address: Soria Galvarro Street and 1st November S / N.

Description: Paintings, altarpieces, sculptures, liturgical ornaments and other pieces from the colonial era are on display.
Mineralogical and Geological Museum

Description: This museum houses an exhibition of more than 2000 samples of minerals from the Andean, central and eastern regions of Bolivia.

Description: The Mining Museum is a repository dedicated to the extraction of minerals and the traditions of underground workers.

Collections: It is located inside an old mine. It contains machinery, instruments, photos, maps, minerals, etc., referring to mining work.
